Florencio Zepeda
May 4th, 2021
Florencio Zepeda has been working for South Coast Lumber Co. in our Veneer Division for almost 32 years. He started out pulling chain for a couple years, then he operated the clipper for about 10 years, and has been operating the lathe ever since.
The lathe tends to be one of the most intriguing processes out of our operations. Rightfully so, it is extremely fascinating watching a log almost disappear within seconds. Florencio describes the action as a roll of toilet paper unraveling very quickly. Using industry terms, the log spins against the lathe knives, being sliced into a long thin ribbon of veneer which will then be clipped to size and transported to Pacific Wood Laminates where it will be used in the manufacturing of plywood or LVL.
Having been with the company for over 30 years, Florencio explained that continuous innovations and investments have made work much easier. Not only are jobs less physically demanding, but they are also much more productive. Florencio and the rest of the veneer crew have been breaking production records with quality teamwork and a little help from modern technology. His advice for anyone interested in working at the mill, “Be positive and do your best, new jobs are always hard.” Florencio explains that working for the mill is a great option, especially as an alternative to college.
On the weekends, Florencio enjoys playing golf at Salmon Run Golf Course located right here in Brookings. He has yet to hit a hole in one, but he is getting close! He enjoys the ocean scenery and having his siblings close by.
Florencio is regarded as a model employee with an impressive understanding of the flow of operations. We are so proud and grateful for all that you do. Thank you for your admirable leadership and dedication!
